African con­scious­ness took cen­tre stage on Ju­ly 24 as the Lidj Ya­su Omowale Eman­ci­pa­tion Vil­lage opened in grand style at the Queen’s Park Sa­van­nah.

With the coun­try en­ter­ing the fi­nal week lead­ing up to the Eman­ci­pa­tion Day cel­e­bra­tions, the open­ing pro­vid­ed a vi­brant show­case of African her­itage, iden­ti­ty and pride.

Among those cap­tur­ing the at­mos­phere was pho­tog­ra­ph­er Roger Lewis of Look In­to My Eyes, who doc­u­ment­ed a colour­ful dis­play of African con­scious­ness and cul­tur­al ex­pres­sion through cloth­ing, eth­nic­i­ty, body art, ac­ces­sories and fam­i­ly.

The men brought their A-game, adding flair and per­son­al­i­ty to the oc­ca­sion, while the chil­dren proved a par­tic­u­lar high­light, bring­ing their own en­er­gy and en­thu­si­asm to the fes­tiv­i­ties.
