Akilah Jaramogi, a Merikin Maroon descendant, is an environmentalist and the creator, owner and head designer of Akilah’s Jewellery.
A self-taught craftsperson, she has spent decades planting trees, harvesting raw materials, crafting jewellery, and conducting workshops and seminars on the sustainable use of indigenous and natural materials.
Her passion for forests, fashion and people has been the driving force behind the success of her business, both in the field and on the runway.
It also reflects her connection to the African ancestral heritage that flows through her DNA, tracing roots to Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone, as well as to the Maroons of the United States and the Merikins of Trinidad.
Promoting an ecological pathway to fashion while supporting a green economy is at the heart of Akilah’s Jewellery. Based at the Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project in St Ann’s, the internationally acclaimed enterprise transforms organically grown seeds, shells, pods, as well as bones and beads sourced across the Caribbean into high-fashion ecological jewellery.
For more than 30 years, Akilah’s Jewellery has been showcased locally, regionally and internationally at fashion runways, green seminars, trade shows and festivals in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, St Lucia, Tortola, Barbados, Grenada, Italy, Fiji, Dominica and many other countries.
The family-based, female-owned enterprise designs, manufactures and sells a distinctive line of eco-friendly, high-fashion jewellery for people of all ages.
