With more than 40 years in the beauty industry, Ephraim Hunte-De La Chevrotiere is a makeup guru, educator, photographer, and artist who has changed the face of beauty locally and internationally.

Hunte-De La Chevrotiere has dedicated his life to honing the craft of makeup art, and along the way has blessed the faces of many. As one of the few males in a female-dominated industry, his dedication to his craft and consistent excellence has garnered the trust of even high-profile performers and beauty queens, namely Whitney Houston, Wendy Fitzwilliam, Destra Garcia and Denyse Plummer.

In 1973, Hunte-De La Chevrotiere left T&T to initially pursue a career in electronic engineering in New York. His interests took an unexpected turn upon being invited to the International Beauty Trade Show in New York. Mesmerized almost instantly by the glitz, glamour and acute skill of the makeup artists and hairstylists present, he began to conceptualize trying his hand at makeup artistry. Eventually, Hunte-De La Chevrotiere elected to pursue makeup courses, “and never turned back.”

Interestingly enough, it was not only the beauty of the makeup world that ignited his interest, but also the business behind makeup. Hunte-De La Chevrotiere was “drawn completely to the business aspect of realizing a personalized cosmetic line with my own label.” He also saw the great value potential of getting involved in the world of cosmetics.

Hunte-De La Chevrotiere was a visionary, as the female beauty industry has been renowned as resilient even through global crises, and is one of the most consistent revenue generators internationally. Aside from the clear opportunities of the industry, however, he saw an opportunity to be able to express his passion for creativity and artistry which was always at his core. He took the opportunity to change course from engineering, and dive into this field of makeup, displaying his art on the blank canvases of faces.

Hunte-De La Chevrotiere quickly rose to international acclaim with the expert strokes of his brush, being published in over 25 magazines internationally, including Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Sophisticate’s Black Hair, Essence and Everybody’s Magazine. In the 1980’s and 1990’s in New York, his company Ephraim Hunte Productions Inc. was closely involved in the beauty aspects of high-end presentations featuring fashions of 7th Avenue designers.

Not limiting himself to the path traditionally trodden in North America, Hunte-De La Chevrotiere spent years learning, growing, and gaining fresh perspectives in the industry working in West African countries, including Mali, Ghana and Burkina Faso. Meeting with and working with the late Whitney Houston is also a standout moment of his career, and he describes his involvement with some of the most beautiful world-class supermodels, Beverly Johnson, Tyra Banks and Billie Blair as “epic”.

Choosing a non-traditional career path, and a female-dominated one, Hunte-De La Chevrotiere faced the challenges of being on the receiving end of skepticisms, both by fellow industry professionals and others. However, he has never let the skepticism bother him.

“I was always about creating the best work that I could,” he said. “For me, it was all about attention to detail and perfection.”

Leading with this passion, he has been able to rise above any negativity thrown his way and be counted among the best in the field.

Receiving an award from the Kodak company in 1986, and the Master Classic Award in Makeup Artistry in 2012, Hunte-De La Chevrotiere’s commitment to creating flawless looks was celebrated and recognized. Even after decades, he continues to work as a makeup artist and never stops learning and evolving as the industry changes.

Hunte-De La Chevrotiere began sharing his wealth of expertise with budding makeup artists in 2002, opening Ephraim Hunte International Makeup Academy in Diego Martin.

Known widely as the ‘Makeup Guru’, he has performed research, developed new theoretical foundations of beauty and makeup, and created course curriculum for beauty education. As an educator, he seeks to help women better understand Beauty Makeup versus Makeup Trends. He has trained many well-known makeup artists, and is contributing to the repository of local knowledge in the field by launching three books in 2024. In June 2024, his first book, “A Guide to Beauty Makeup – Natural Basic to Glam” will be released.

For beauty beginners, like the author of this article, Hunte-De La Chevrotiere has one simple tip. Therefore, caring for and preserving your skin to the best of your ability helps you achieve simple and stunning looks, as little foundation is needed. He encourages women to care for their skin as a baseline to their beauty journey, and to strive to research and understand the basics of makeup to guide them in its application.

Continuing to work, research and teach in the industry, his contributions to the field of beauty in T&T are a bedrock and indeed a catalytic spring for new and emerging makeup artists.is a makeup guru, educator, photographer, and artist who has changed the face of beauty locally and internationally.
