OBITUARY
Nadir James Bakar
April 16, 1939 – October 19, 2026
Nadir James Bakar was born April 16, 1939 at home in Gasparillo, Trinidad, West Indies to James Bakar and Jeannette (Subhan), and passed away at home in Clovis, California October 19, 2026 at the age of 87.
Nadir attended Gasparillo Government School until the age of eleven when he won a Government Exhibition Scholarship to attend St. Mary’s College in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad where he graduated in 1958 with Distinction in Physics, Chemistry, and Math. During his High School years there he won the Jerningham Silver Medal in 1954, and medals for Physics and Chemistry, as well as the Jerningham Book Prize. He ran the Photography Club, won several prizes in Photographic Competitions at St. Mary’s, as well as 1st prize in a National Photo Contest.
Following graduation, the Priests at St. Mary’s College tutored him for 6 months after which he wrote exams as an External Student and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of London, England in 1959. Nadir stayed on at St. Mary’s College to teach Physics, Chemistry, and Math for a year while he applied to Medical Schools abroad.
Nadir entered Medical School at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in September 1960, won the Lady Meredith prize for Ob/Gyn in 1963, and graduated with his MD in 1964. This was followed by a year’s Internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal; then a year of General Surgery at Queen Mary Veteran’s Hospital in Montreal; and finally a 3 year Residency in Ob/Gyn divided between the Royal Victoria Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Montreal, and the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario. During the final year of Residency in London, Ontario he was a Research Fellow in the Department of Ob/Gyn, as well as a PhD student in the Department of Pathological Chemistry until 1971. He achieved his F.R.C.S.(C) in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1970.
During his first year of Residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital Nadir met his future wife, Lois Susanne Fenn, and they married a year later September 14, 1967 at the Queen Mary Road United Church in Hampstead, Quebec while they both worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital—Nadir as the Chief Resident in Ob/Gyn, and Lois a Delivery Room Registered Nurse.
They moved from London, Ontario, back to Montreal, in March 1971 where Nadir started his Ob/Gyn Practice in the Westmount Medical Building, Westmount, Quebec in April that year. At the same time he joined the teaching staff in the Department of Ob/Gyn at McGill University, subsequently attaining the rank of Assistant Professor. The couple’s two sons, Scott James and Kevin George were born in 1972 and 1973 respectively.
Nadir had the opportunity to learn I.V.F. at the University of Melbourne, Australia in 1984, and later that year started an I.V.F Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal. Later in 1984, he studied the retrieval of eggs using ultrasound in Vienna, Austria.
Nadir chose to relocate in 1989, and he, Lois, and their two sons, settled in Clovis, California. Nadir set up an Infertility Practice including I.V.F. in Fresno, California until a catastrophic illness prompted sudden retirement in December 2004.
He maintained a life-long passion for Photography, Painting, Drawing, and Antique Cars; and was a member of the San Joaquin Corvair Club which is part of the National Corsa Club.
Nadir is survived by his wife Lois, son Scott (Laura) of Pleasanton, California, son Kevin of Yorba Linda, California, and three grandchildren: Jessica, Julian, and Nolen. He is also survived by his brother Leslie (aka Howard) of Cortaro, Arizona, and brother-in-law Edward Fenn of Surrey, British Columbia, as well as many cousins in Trinidad, England, Canada, the Netherlands, and the U.S.A. He was predeceased by his parents, two older brothers: Kismat (an infant), and Rashard (age 2), aunts and uncles, and some cousins.
Nadir and Lois have lived a restricted retirement life in the same home they purchased in 1989, and Nadir has fought valiantly to maintain stability in health in spite of many setbacks throughout the years. He passed away quietly in his sleep, and may he rest in well-deserved peace now, a wonderful husband and father, and well-liked by everyone — the most frequently mentioned characteristic being his wonderful smile.
No services are planned as per Nadir’s wishes.
