Presentation College moved three points closer to a mathematical chance of clinching the Premiership Division title of the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with a convincing 6-0 victory over Queen's Royal College (QRC) at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella on Wednesday.
However, Presentation coach Shawn Cooper is less than impressed, saying all they can do now is try to beat a difficult St Anthony's College team in Westmooring on Monday, but he does not think Naparima College, having reached so far, will give it away at the final hurdle.
"I am not so overwhelmed by us having to depend on QRC beating Naparima on Monday, so it's kind of bitter-sweet for us, because, after the last performance from St Anthony's, I don't think their confidence will be high."
The Royalians, who were without five starting players for the match after the coach benched them for failing to attend a training session on the Divali holiday (Monday), were pitiful on the field and failed to put together four or fives passes. Their game was summed up by coach Nigel Grovesnor's decision to use injured first-choice goalkeeper Jacques Poon-Lewis as a striker when he came on as a replacement for Brian Armstrong in the second half.
The Presentation win came courtesy a double strike from Dantaye Gilbert in the 30th and 58th minutes.
However, it was Markus Mason who opened the account for the southerners after just nine minutes.
And with the Royalians giving very little to no resistance in the defence, the host fired in its second goal two minutes later by Ackeel Jacob.
Gilbert sent his team to the half-time interval with his first item in the 30th.
After the break, Presentation Gilbert collected the ball unchallenged in the area and he fired powerfully past Jumaane Mc Neil in the QRC goal for a 4-0 advantage, one that they did not let slip.
The Royalians mounted little chances and when they did, they were foiled by poor finishing. Their most glaring chance came ironically when Poon-Lewis send Renaldo Mullings through Presentation defence, but his attempt on goal was deflected wide.
And moments later Ezekiel Armstrong dribbled across the field before being hacked down in the opposition area, but despite a waving linesman in an attempt to catch the referee Cecil Hinds' eye to signal the foul, she waved play on.
As play continued Presentation used the opportunity to increase its tally to 5-0 when Shakeem Copper, from some 25 yards out, unleashed a thunderous drive that beat Mc Neil on his right post in the 70th minute.
And after several easily missed chances for the southerners, substitute Jaiye Sheppard sealed the win when he tapped in from a goal-mouth scramble in the 90th.
The win took Presentation to 30 points and into the second position, behind leaders Naparima on 33 points with one round of matches to play on Monday.
Meanwhile, at Fatima Ground, East Mucurapo hammered Speyside 5-0, courtesy a double by Jaheil Patrick and a goal-apiece from Jamali Alexis, Daniel David and Zion Mc Leod, while at Arouca, Carapichaima got a hat-trick from Keilon Burnette in the 48th, 62nd and 89th minutes to defeat Trinity East 4-2.
In a bottom of the table clash at St Mary's Grounds, St Clair, the home team — CIC went down heavily 4-0 defeat to Trinity Moka which closed out its league campaign on a positive note despite being relegated along with St Mary's for the 2020 season.
