An investigation is underway into a riot in the cell block of the Supreme Court in San Fernando where prisoners set fire and damaged fixtures in protest over food.
With broken pieces of glass being thrown at Court & Process officers, a Guard & Emergency riot team had to rush in to suppress the irate prisoners. Guardian Media learned that when the caterer brought food for prisoners shortly after 3 pm Friday, the prisoners complained about the quality of the meal. Officers said the meal consisted of rice and a small quantity of red beans, which some of the prisoners did not want. When one of the prisoners spoke to a police inspector, he said they could have the food that their relatives brought for them. However, another officer refused.
It was then several prisoners began breaking the bulbs, smashing fixtures, lighting papers in the cell and throwing it at the officers.
A video shared on social media showed the officers scampering for safety while one extinguished the fire with containers of water. The riot officers were called in and the prisoners calmed down. None of the officers at the cell block was injured. While there were approximately 15 prisoners in the cell block at the time, a senior officer said the rioters were not yet identified. Earlier in the day, police found a small amount of marijuana on a remand prisoner. When questioned, he called several names. An investigation into how the prisoner got the drugs has begun.
