The electrifying stage play, Anansi & the 10 Dragons, part of the Season of Anansi National Folklore Festival 2025, returns for one night only at Queen’s Hall next Wednesday.

This ten-year anniversary gala restaging by Rubadiri Victor and the Wire Bend Folklore Theatre promises an unforgettable journey into a world of myth, magic, and modern spectacle, celebrating the timeless wisdom of Caribbean folklore through the lens of Afro-Futurism.

Audiences will witness the legendary Anansi, the clever spider-trickster of West African and Caribbean mythology, face off against ten fearsome dragons to save the kidnapped Lion Prince and the fallen champions of the Animal Kingdom.

Costumes are designed by Trinidad’s greatest dragon costume creators, including Winston Daniel, a third-generation Carnival artisan renowned for his intricate dragon mas creations, and Jason Meighoo a multiple dragon champion known for the power and spectacle of his huge dragon creations.

The play honours the enduring legacy of traditional Trinidadian masquerade and also incorporates animation onstage.

The day’s offerings include two school performances at 9 am and 12.30 pm, and a 7 pm gala performance preceded by cocktails at 6 pm.

This must-see production is a centerpiece of the expanded Season of Anansi Festival, a two-month celebration of folklore and storytelling launched last month. The festival includes the National Bookstore Tour and School Storytelling Tour, both led by Victor, whose mission is to re-dynamize bookstores as cultural hubs and re-establish reading as a primary leisure activity for youth and families.

Victor, a celebrated author of three national bestselling Anansi novels—Anansi & the 10 Dragons, Anansi the Book of Night, and Anansi in the Land of Monsters & Other Stories —believes this work is critical to preserving the storytelling traditions of the Caribbean.

“We have some of the richest folklore on the planet,” he assures. “Our elders passed it on, around fires and dinner tables. Now, it’s our turn to pass it forward to new generations in books, in theatre, in cinemas, and on the digital stage.”
