Unicomer (Trinidad) Limited recently partnered with United Way to improve the physical and learning environment at Success Laventille Secondary School.
As part of the broader Day of Caring initiative, the company has contributed computers, fans, plants, and a school crest with employees and partners volunteering to install these items.
The United Way Day of Caring initiative is a signature volunteer employee engagement event. It allows corporate partners to engage their employees to give their time and energy to selected projects. The range of projects can include improving schools and NGO buildings, beach clean-ups, gardening and delivering care packages to elderly homes.
Unicomer thoughtfully selected Success Laventille Secondary School as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to community development, particularly in underserved areas. For over 30 years, Courts, a brand of the Unicomer Group, has proudly sponsored the Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille, enabling members of the Laventille community to actively participate in national cultural events.
This recent investment in Success Laventille Secondary School will further benefit the community, including families and friends of the steel orchestra membership who are connected to the school.
The full project scope included:
Light electrical works and installation of over forty fans in classrooms, making the learning spaces safer and more comfortable
Donation of six computers to enhance digital learning opportunities for the students
Installation of a new school crest on the front wall, reinforcing school pride
Planting a variety of plants around the schoolyard, creating a vibrant and inviting environment.
Through its brands Courts and ServiTech, along with the support of several corporate partners, the company has been able to execute this ambitious project. These partners included the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, G3 Hardware, Signart Ltd., Powertech Electrical Company, the National Maintenance Training and Security Company (MTS), the Success Laventille Secondary School Alumni and Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille.
Shiva Mungal, Managing Director of Unicomer, commented on the importance of Unicomer’s corporate volunteerism to communities. He said: “Unicomer is very happy to be a corporate partner with United Way on this Day of Caring initiative. As a company, we try to stress within our teams and organisation that giving of resources, funding and time is important.
“But time is something you can’t get back, making it one of the most valuable things you can offer. As such, we’re pleased we are able to volunteer our time and we hope to be a part of the Day of Caring in years to come.”
The Principal of Success Laventille Secondary School, Stacey Lezama, also shared her thoughts on the impact of the project on the school. She remarked, “the school has greatly appreciated the contribution made by Unicomer as a stakeholder. The SLSS staff and students will benefit immensely from the investment in computers, fans and plants. It was a pleasure seeing the staff come in and assist with the beautification project, even as they interacted with our student volunteers.”
Unicomer remains committed to community development through its corporate social responsibility initiatives. This project allowed the organisation to enhance the school environment allowing students to thrive and feel a sense of pride in their school. This initiative has an extra special meaning to us as we made a noteworthy impact on the community’s development through investments in youth education.
