Weeks after he was tipped for the role of chairman of Angostura, former Sport Minister Gary Hunt has officially been elected to the board of directors of Angostura.
Following a special meeting at the House of Angostura yesterday, the Radical Designs CEO and founder was confirmed in the role.
The other nominees confirmed as directors on the company’s board were Patricia Dindyal, Shival Maharaj, Roxane De Freitas, and Jennifer Frederick.
Fraser Thornton who was also set to be elected to the board, withdrew without an official reason being provided at the meeting.
“The meeting was held this morning, everything went off smoothly,” said shareholder Peter Permell, “There were six nominees presented to the meeting, one was withdrawn and the other five were elected unanimously.”
Permell said the meeting swiftly addressed the issue of the board’s election.
“The election of directors was the only item on the agenda. The meeting was successfully concluded. Accordingly, at this time, I would just like to take this opportunity to congratulate the newly elected board of directors, wish them well while assuring them of my cooperation and support. But most of all I wish to encourage them to always do their best and never loose focus of their most important role and function to grow the company and enhance shareholder value.”
The new Angostura board was elected two months after members of the previous board resigned in the wake of criticism by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who said some board members appointed under the previous administration were ‘holding on shamelessly.’
On June 3, member of that board chaired by attorney-at-law Terrence Bharath and comprising Dr Sterling Frost, Dr Maryam Richards, Gerard Cooper, Tricia Coosal, and Franka Costelloe, resigned from their posts.
Hunt was elected Member of Parliament for Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West in 2007 as a member of the People’s National Movement and served as Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs under then Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
Almost a decade after leaving public office in 2010, his brother, Ahloy Hunt contested the St Joseph constituency for the United National Congress in the 2020 general election.
