The T&T Electricity Commission (T&TEC) has announced the permanent closure of its Nicholas Tower customer service centre at Port-of-Spain, effective March 22.
In a statement on its Facebook page yesterday, T&TEC did not indicate the reason for the closure, but apologised for the inconvenience caused.
However, T&TEC assured that the other 14 service centres remain open for business as usual, Mondays to Fridays, from 8 am to 3.45 pm.
In October 2021, T&TEC moved its downtown office at Broadway in Port-of-Spain to Nicholas Tower.
The company’s decision to close its Nicholas Tower office has drawn criticism from Facebook users.
One user said, “Nothing you all will stick with to help people. So, no sub-outlet in Port-of-Spain. You all are wrong about that. I do not care. I am not even thinking about myself at this moment. The people you all are going to inconvenience are huge, but you all don’t care, cause it’s not hampering your situation.
“You all know a lot of people don’t like this online thing, some people do not use computers, phones, or tablets, as they are not technology-savvy, but T&TEC forcing people who cannot get to you all by 3.30 pm to do what? Where do you go? You are all just wrong about this. The thoroughfare is not enough, because I went in the other day to ask a question and it was so nice to walk in and get an answer and walk right out.”
Another user said “Think rent has probably risen but I’m so upset... it’s already difficult to get time off to pay bills... Nicholas Tower was the easiest to pay as the location was convenient. Now it’s going to be stressful.”
While another said “Absolutely foolish move, this centre facilitated the elderly so much.”
Another said: “Nah man you all have to be kidding ... that location is a real convenience. Why close it ... come on T&TEC please reconsider this decision. Please make another office available in downtown Port-of-Spain.”
T&TEC did not immediately respond to a request from Guardian Media for a comment.
