About 15 households in the Cedros district have been affected by flooding, with water entering homes in Bonasse, Fullerton, Limefield Village and St Mary’s Housing Development.
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen yesterday directed that immediate assistance, including cleaning supplies and support with clean-up operations, be provided to affected residents.
Ameen made the announcement in a media release, as the Ministry’s Disaster Management Unit monitored flooding following periods of heavy rainfall and overcast conditions.
The affected areas include Manmohan Singh Street and Edward Street in Bonasse Village, Fullerton beachfront and Fullerton Village, Campbell Street in Limefield Village, and St Mary’s Housing Development along Perseverance Road.
Teams from the ministry were on the ground conducting damage assessments.
River levels in the Icacos area were also being monitored, with rivers reported at bank-full capacity. Tidal conditions were under close observation because of the potential impact on low-lying areas.
The ministry also received one report of a possible landslide. An assessment found that the affected house was not under immediate threat and the matter was private in nature.
The statement said the ministry was working with the Siparia Regional Corporation, Members of Parliament and other first responders as the flooding situation was being monitored.
Residents in affected areas were urged to take precautions, avoid floodwaters and contact the Siparia Regional Corporation Disaster Management Unit if assistance was needed. —APS
