Police are probing an act of sacrilege and theft after bandits smashed the wall to enter a Hindu temple in Sangre Grande.
Investigators say the Public Relations Officer of the Kailash Hindu Mandir reported to police officers that he secured the temple located at Eastern Main Road, Sangre Chiquito, on August 20. However, when he returned to the mandir on Monday, he observed several pots and chairs covered with sponges in the yard. Upon making further checks, he noticed a wooden wall, located on the southern side of the building, smashed, and the inside of the temple ransacked.
The PRO also reported to the police that one 30,000 BTU air-conditioning unit, 20 chairs, three pots, and six folding tables were missing.
Police believe entry was gained into the temple by the bandits prying open a window located on the western side of the building and smashing the wall to gain entry to the altar of the temple, where many of the missing items were secured.
Officials at the temple have yet to put a value on the stolen items and the damage caused to the building.
