A cloud of thick black smoke rises from a fire at Beetham Landfill, close to the National Petroleum (NP) building in Sea Lots.
The fire, which started earlier this afternoon, is near the main exit route for drivers in rush hour traffic leaving Port-of-Spain after work. Traffic is expected for drivers heading east along Beetham Highway this afternoon.
The fire started this afternoon, shortly after daily-paid SWMCOL workers protested over salaries for the third consecutive day.
Daily paid workers from the Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) are demanding an increase in wages or the country's landfills may be shut down.
Workers say they did not start the fire.
