Drivers flee Port-of-Spain as fire rages at Beetham Landfill

A cloud of thick black smoke ris­es from a fire at Beetham Land­fill, close to the Na­tion­al Pe­tro­le­um (NP) build­ing in Sea Lots.

The fire, which start­ed ear­li­er this af­ter­noon, is near the main ex­it route for dri­vers in rush hour traf­fic leav­ing Port-of-Spain af­ter work. Traf­fic is ex­pect­ed for dri­vers head­ing east along Beetham High­way this af­ter­noon.

The fire start­ed this af­ter­noon, short­ly af­ter dai­ly-paid SWM­COL work­ers protest­ed over salaries for the third con­sec­u­tive day.

Dai­ly paid work­ers from the Sol­id Waste Man­age­ment Com­pa­ny Lim­it­ed (SWM­COL) are de­mand­ing an in­crease in wages or the coun­try's land­fills may be shut down.

Work­ers say they did not start the fire.
