The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has extended its yellow-level Adverse Weather Alert to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, warning of increased risk of street flooding, landslides, and rapidly rising watercourses across Trinidad, Tobago, and surrounding waters.
Issued at 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Alert #4 reflects worsening conditions following a day of widespread rainfall, which has left many areas with saturated soils and heightened vulnerability to landslips. The risk of overflow in smaller waterways has also increased. While major rivers remain below critical thresholds, levels continue to rise steadily.
According to a 3:15 p.m. river level advisory from the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, Caroni (Bamboo Settlement #3) stood at 66% capacity, El Carmen at 58%, and Caroni Tumpuna at 51%. Other rivers of note include South Oropouche at 56%, Arouca at 48%, Cipero River at 43%, and North Oropouche at 40%. Most other rivers remain below 40% capacity, including the San Juan River at 21%, Guaracara at 27%, and Couva River at just 8%.
Gusty winds near thunderstorms may further destabilise sea conditions, displace unsecured outdoor items, and topple trees. The public, particularly those in flood-prone or hilly areas, is urged to remain vigilant, avoid flooded routes, secure loose objects, and continue monitoring official updates at www.metoffice.gov.tt
