An ORANGE Level Riverine Flood Alert, as well as a YELLOW Level Adverse Weather Alert remain in effect today, for Trinidad and Tobago, the most recent advisories from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) state.
The Riverine Flood Alert-ORANGE which mainly covers rivers in the Caroni River Basin in Trinidad remains in effect until 6:00 pm today.
This Met Service advisory, issued at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, states:
“After continued rainfall activity, the Manuel Congo River and the Caroni River near the Tumpuna and El Carmen areas have all reached critical threshold levels (based on official data) and may soon overflow their banks as water levels continue in an upward trajectory. While weather conditions have settled over Trinidad currently, further rainfall activity will likely continue over the next 24 hours which will result in further elevation of these river levels. As a result, there continues to be a severe risk to public safety, livelihood and property in communities surrounding these rivers.”
It adds: “Other major rivers, including the North and South Oropouche, are rising at relatively lower rates but are also being monitored closely.”

The most recent advisory issued earlier this morning states:
“Occasional showers and periods of rain are still expected during the day today as well as a medium (60%) chance for periodic heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. There is an increased risk of street flooding and landslides/landslips, particularly in areas with saturated soils. In the event of heavy rainfall, smaller watercourses may rise rapidly and overtop in some areas. Winds may become gusty in the vicinity of heavy showers/thunderstorms. These winds may further agitate sea conditions, displace loose outdoor items and even topple unstable trees.”
In addition to continue monitoring official sources for the latest weather updates, members of the public on both islands MUST take all necessary precautions to mitigate potential impacts, including securing loose outdoor objects..
The Met Service strongly advises people living in flood and landslide prone areas to remain alert, take precautions where necessary and monitor official updates.
Also, motorists and residents in flood-prone areas MUST AVOID flooded areas and exercise caution.
