An Ari­ma man was shot dead dur­ing an ex­change of gun­fire with po­lice on Thurs­day evening.

Po­lice iden­ti­fied the man as Mustapha Gu­lab, of Bue­na Vista Street, Ari­ma.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said around 7 pm, of­fi­cers were on mo­bile pa­trol near SWA­HA Hin­du Col­lege, Cu­napo South­ern Main Road, San­gre Grande, when they ob­served a man dri­ving a white Hilux ve­hi­cle look­ing sus­pi­cious.

Of­fi­cers at­tempt­ed to stop the dri­ver of the ve­hi­cle, but he al­leged­ly opened fire on them. The po­lice re­turned fire and Gu­lab was shot about the body. The ve­hi­cle crashed and came to a stop at Coalmine Bridge. Gu­lab was tak­en to the San­gre Grande Hos­pi­tal, where he was pro­nounced dead on ar­rival.

Of­fi­cers said they re­cov­ered one AR-15 ri­fle and 11 rounds of am­mu­ni­tion. CSI Of­fi­cers vis­it­ed and processed the scene. Sev­er­al spent shells were found.
