Days after Guardian Media reported exclusively on the tragic death of Nelinne Prosper, attorney Prakash Ramadhar has promised to assist her family in getting justice.
Prosper was only 30 years old and worked at Massy Motors when she went to the San Fernando General Hospital in December 2019, to have her first baby.
Her mother Cheryl Montoute is convinced something went wrong at the hospital which resulted in Prosper suffering cardiac arrest and dying.
The baby survived.
But three years after Prosper’s death, Montoute said the hospital authorities have not answered her questions as to what caused a young, healthy mother to die.
Speaking to Guardian Media, Ramadhar said he will do all that he can to bring justice to the grieving family.
“We will do what we can to help her through this ordeal when her daughter expecting her first child died and her death was preventable. Also, the treatment Cheryl got is an injustice of enormous proportions. Cheryl had to leave her job to look after her daughter’s baby. We are honoured to participate in seeking justice for this family,” Ramadhar said.
Also stepping forward to assist was the former medical director of the San Fernando General Hospital Dr Anand Chatoorgoon who is a Specialist Anaesthetist and Intensivist.
Dr Chatoorgon said he was interested in seeing Prosper’s medical notes and later testifying on her behalf as he had a pretty good idea of what caused Prosper to die.
“The failure of proper, effective and efficient systems at the public healthcare institutions is due to the failure/refusal of the Minister to appoint suitable individuals to the Boards of the RHAs and other top positions of the RHAs,” he charged.
Dr Chatoorgoon said the SWRHA had a duty to explain to Montoute what really transpired on the day Prosper was taken to the operating theatre in the early hours of the morning for a Caesarean Section.
“Though the baby survived, Nelinne Proper died sometime after the caesarean section. And three years later, the mother is yet to be told what really transpired on that fateful day,” Dr Chatoorgoon said.
He claimed, “The SWRHA has been hiding behind the COVID-19 pandemic in its failure to date to explain to the aggrieved what were the circumstances that led to the untimely death of Nelinne Prosper.”
Chatoorgoon said Montoute is entitled to a detailed explanation by the SWRHA about what happened to her daughter, failing which she is entitled to seek legal redress.
“The Minister of Health needs to change most of the members of the SWRHA Board and his present CEO, failing which the distressed and diseased will continue to face unspeakable and horrendous trials and tribulations not only at the SFGH but also in the Health Centers and District Health Facilities that come under the umbrella of the SWRHA,” Dr Chatoorgoon added.
Meanwhile, the SWRHA has extended condolences to Prosper’s family and has launched an investigation into the death.
The Authority said it had arranged two meetings with Prosper’s relatives.
In the meantime, Montoute said she was thankful that both Dr Chatoorgoon and attorney Ramadhar had heard her cries for help. She said despite getting public assistance it has been difficult caring for the baby.
She wants those who may be accountable for her daughter’s death to be held liable so that a similar situation does not happen to someone else in the future.
