“Al­lyuh, they come to kill me,” were the chill­ing words of Pe­nal labour­er Bran­don Har­riper­sad, sec­onds be­fore he was fa­tal­ly shot by ban­dits at his home on Mon­day night.

As they es­caped in his fam­i­ly’s car, the ban­dits rolled over the body of the 34-year-old man. Dur­ing the or­deal, Har­riper­sad’s fa­ther, Shel­don Har­riper­sad, 54, was al­so in­jured.

Around 10.45 pm, Har­riper­sad was in the garage area of his home at Batchyia Vil­lage when his rel­a­tives heard him shout out.

Ac­cord­ing to a po­lice re­port, a fe­male rel­a­tive who was in­side the house heard sev­er­al gun­shots, and as she opened the front door, two masked ban­dits ac­cost­ed her.

They de­mand­ed cash, jew­ellery and the keys for a white Maz­da 3. Har­riper­sad’s fa­ther was shot as he ran out of the house, but he es­caped. The fe­male rel­a­tive told po­lice the ban­dits got in­to her car, and while mak­ing their es­cape, drove over Har­riper­sad as he lay on the ground, bleed­ing.

Har­riper­sad’s fa­ther was tak­en to the Siparia Health Fa­cil­i­ty, then trans­ferred to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal and was sub­se­quent­ly dis­charged.

Of­fi­cers from the Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions Re­gion 3 are in­ves­ti­gat­ing. —Sascha Wil­son
