The woman who was found dead in a house in Curepe on Saturday has been identified as Alana Roopchand of Bangladesh Village, St Joseph.
According to a police report, an off-duty officer alerted his counterparts from the St Joseph Police Station around 8 am that the body of the 32-year-old could be found on a mattress in a partially burnt, abandoned house at Mc Donnell Street, Curepe.
Reports indicate the off-duty officer had been washing down his yard when he was approached by a man and told to check his cameras, as a dead woman was seen in the derelict house.
Upon checking, the officer discovered the partially nude Roopchand lying on a mattress on her back, with a wooden handle knife stuck in the right side of her neck. A brown cloth covered her face.
The District Medical Officer visited the scene and ordered an autopsy to be conducted at the Forensic Science Centre.
Among the evidence collected at the scene were several articles of clothing, two knives, a bed sheet, one condom pack and an empty cigarette box.
Investigators learnt that Roopchand was last seen in the Curepe area, after telling several people she was “going to handle a scene.”
Police said a friend who later checked for her at the abandoned house was the one who allegedly found her dead.
