A Belmont man is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today, charged with the murder of Shawndell Thomas, which occurred on Tuesday 4th October 2022.
Akeel Murrell, aka ‘Ants’, 46, of Belle Eau Road, was charged with the offence following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, on Wednesday 12th October 2022.
Thomas, aka ‘Froggy’, 26, of St. Barb’s Road, Belmont, was walking in the district on Monday 3rd October 2022, when he approached a group of men and allegedly became verbally and physically abusive toward one of them.
During the altercation, the victim allegedly pushed the man into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The car avoided coming into contact with the man, who then allegedly stabbed the victim. The victim was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital for treatment.
He subsequently died on Tuesday 4th October 2022.
The accused surrendered himself to officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region One, on Thursday 6th October 2022.
Investigations were supervised by ASP (Ag.) Simon, Insp. Lynch and Mongroo and W/Cpl (Ag.) Jules, all of the HBI Region One.
Murrell was charged by PC Wilson, also of HBI Region One, on Wednesday 12th October 2022.
