Two days after a horrific accident claimed the life of Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) bus driver Munsaf Khan, colleagues joined his family and friends to give him a glowing farewell.
Khan, 48, of Avocat Village, Fyzabad, died on Tuesday morning in a collision along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, Freeport, while operating a PTSC Deluxe Coach service. The crash also claimed the life of passenger Roxanne Phillip, 39. Investigators are still piecing together what happened, but the loss has reverberated through the PTSC community and among the travelling public.
Dozens of PTSC employees, in and out of uniform, gathered at the Avocat Masjid for the Janazah rites. Imam Shahid Hosein led the recitation of Surah Yasin, and the men performed the Janazah Salaat, the Islamic funeral prayer seeking forgiveness and mercy for the deceased.
PTSC’s Assistant Deputy General Manager of Operations (South), Bernadette Alexander-McGillvary, paid tribute to a colleague she said embodied the best of the corporation: quiet, steady, and unfailingly kind. Known by his nickname “Batman,” Khan’s presence, she recalled, brought warmth, and his bright smile lifted spirits wherever he worked.
“He was an exemplar of professionalism and personified what the corporation deemed a model employee. He always endeavoured for excellence in the manner in which he provided services to the travelling community on behalf of the PTSC. Munsaf was a friendly soul and truly a warm-hearted person, always smiling and greeting everyone he encountered during his tour of duty,” McGillvary said.
She said PTSC built the San Fernando to UWI service on clear principles: on-time performance and high standards of delivery, and sought drivers who could uphold them.
“Bearing this in mind, Munsaf was instantaneously an ideal candidate. He responded to our call with great enthusiasm, which has been unmatched regarding the quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction he executed daily.”
Selected for the Deluxe Coach service, PTSC said Khan demonstrated the attributes of a PTSC ambassador. Even after his passing, UWI students, their parents, and members of the public continued to express their love, admiration, and grief. McGillvary told Khan’s relatives that PTSC shared their loss and would carry his example forward in service.
“Munsaf, your memory will live on; your dedication and the love you had for service to your country will serve as an example to your comrades and those who strive for excellence.”
