Iconic calypsonian and five-time national Calypso Monarch Leroy “Black Stalin” Calliste will be given a grand funeral in San Fernando next Thursday.
Although he was widely travelled and had won international acclaim for his calypsoes, Stalin’s final resting place will be at the Paradise Cemetery, near his San Fernando home.
The public viewing for Stalin will take place on Wednesday from 2 pm to 6 pm at J. E Guide Funeral Home on Coffee Street, San Fernando. His funeral will take place on Thursday following a street procession and parade.
Like his friend Lionel Jagessar Sr, Calliste’s music will blare through the streets as his body is taken from the funeral home to the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) at 11 am. Following the service, he will be taken to the cemetery.
Stalin, 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning at his home. Since 2014, he had been battling health complications after suffering a stroke which affected his speech and movement on the right side of his body.
A tribute to Stalin will also be held in San Fernando on Tuesday night.
Anyone wanting to contribute wreaths can send them to JE Guide Funeral Home on Wednesday before 6 pm.
