Thieves broke into Benji’s Bakery on Guaico Tamana Road, Sangre Grande, early yesterday morning, stealing pastries, bread and other items.
The owners discovered the burglary later that day. At this time, the value of the stolen items cannot be estimated.
No one was harmed during the break-in, as the bakery is closed on Saturdays.
Officers from the Sangre Grande CID and CSI visited the scene to gather information. Police are relying on CCTV footage to aid their investigation and make arrests.
Derrick Benjamin, a spokesman for the residents of the area, is calling for increased police patrols between 10 pm and 2 am, as that is when the perpetrators usually commit their crimes.
Benjamin also reported that over eight break-ins have been recorded in Guaico, St Louis Road, and the surrounding areas of Sangre Grande. There was also an attempted home invasion where a pensioner and a relative lived. The relative’s shouts for help scared off the intruders.
Residents said they are frightened for their safety, living in fear, not knowing which home will be targeted next. They have reported seeing four armed men in the area.
Benjamin urged all residents to be vigilant, watch out for their neighbours, and immediately report any strange vehicles or people to the police.
A senior police officer confirmed that several break-ins have been reported and promised that patrols in the area will be increased. However, they also call on residents to assist by reporting suspicious activity.
The officer said, “If you see something, say something” to help the police with their investigations and to arrest the criminals terrorising the community.
