Bush fires claimed two trucks of Rousillac contractor, Ancillary Contractors, on Sunday evening.
According to residents, the bush fires started shortly after lunchtime on the northeastern side of Grants Trace Junction.
However, around 4.45 pm, the white smoke transformed into a thick, dark, billowing cloud at the end of a private road opposite Happy Hill Road.
Upon investigation, neighbours discovered the vehicles ablaze and the owner was not present.
“I call the Fire Service emergency centre one time,” neighbour, Avinash Maharaj said.
He said other neighbours showed up with buckets and attempted to douse the blaze but were unsuccessful.
Guardian Media arrived on the scene roughly 45 minutes after the fire begun and found pastor Douglas Poon, armed with a hose, proving he could deliver more than just the word of God when the need arose.
By that time, the vehicle’s owner, Narendra Kissoon had arrived and other nearby vehicles were moved away from the blaze. Kissoon estimates the trucks were worth $500,000. He said he lost vehicles five years ago at another location due to bush fires.
“Same way. Bush fires spread. Same thing,” he said.
Asked how he felt about losing property to these incidents, he said, “Good thing there’s insurance.”
His neighbour noted that bush fires weren’t common to the area.
“It’s not something normal but as you see, the once in a while they do set a fire it does end up in a catastrophic event like this,” Maharaj said.
Officers of the Point Fortin Fire Station responded to the blaze.
