Calm returned to Moruga Secondary School yesterday after two dreadful days when students displayed bizarre behaviour, fuelling speculation of demonic possession. "Moruga Secondary school is safe. God is in control and he is able to handle any situation," said a parent who gave her name only as Mrs Grainger.
Parents, some accompanied by their children, met with officials of the Ministry of Education and the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) to chart the way forward, following the debacle. Emerging from the meeting, officials declined to speak to the media. Some parents said they were cautioned not to disclose what transpired. Other parents said they had put the fate of their children in the hands of God and would be sending them to school as usual from Monday.
For the third consecutive day, yesterday, school was dismissed early.
Parent Carlene Williams said everything was back to normal. "There was no strange activity at the school," Williams said, in reference to reports over the past two days that female students fainted and complained of being attacked by supernatural forces. Williams said parents would not allow that one incident to set back their children's pursuit of academic excellence.
"God is in control and he would take over. This is our school and we would take it back," she asserted. As parents and officials left the meeting, a Rastafarian man, identified as Winter Cooper, armed with a cutlass and stick, appeared with a herbal concoction which he threw on the road in front of the school. An official of the Ministry of Education confirmed school will resume on Monday.
