A 36-year-old man was shot and killed yes­ter­day, dur­ing an al­leged ex­change of gun­fire with mem­bers of the An­ti-Ex­tor­tion Unit (AEU) at a house in Cara­pichaima.

Po­lice said around 4 am, AEU of­fi­cers went to a prop­er­ty at Palm Av­enue, Or­ange Field Set­tle­ment, Wa­ter­loo Road, Cara­pichaima, as part of an op­er­a­tion to lo­cate a sus­pect who was lat­er iden­ti­fied as Riyad Ali.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice, of­fi­cers came un­der gun­fire af­ter en­ter­ing the premis­es, re­sult­ing in an ex­change of shots.

Ali was struck dur­ing the in­ci­dent and sub­se­quent­ly tak­en to the Ch­agua­nas Health Cen­tre on Ram­saran Street, where he was pro­nounced dead on ar­rival.

The op­er­a­tion al­so re­sult­ed in the seizure of a firearm at the scene and the de­ten­tion of two peo­ple al­leged­ly con­nect­ed to Ali. A sec­ond firearm was al­so re­port­ed­ly found dur­ing a search of the com­pound.

Mean­while, Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Bhag­wan­deen, of the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion, said po­lice were con­tin­u­ing their search for two men in con­nec­tion with an al­leged rob­bery at a drug­store in Char­lieville, Ch­agua­nas, on Wednes­day.

The two sus­pects al­leged­ly en­tered the drug­store, held two em­ploy­ees at gun­point and tied them up be­fore es­cap­ing on foot with an undis­closed quan­ti­ty of cash.

Bhag­wan­deen said in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to both in­ci­dents are con­tin­u­ing.
