Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited (CGCL) has responded to complaints and concerns raised by residents of the Square Deal, Vessigny and Sobo Communities, (persons residing outside the Buffer Zone of the Union Industrial Estate), in respect of excessive noise and vibrations.

The residents say that the noise and vibration plant’s operations is not only causing damage to their houses, but their physical health is at stake, because many are suffering headaches and sleepless nights.

In an official statement issued today, CGCL says it has been “in constant communication with community members, registering their complaints, responding to queries, and working towards determining how our operation may be contributing to these nuisance complaints”.

The company also confirms that it “plans to engage with residents over the next few days to provide further information and updates on the project and will continue to so do in the coming weeks”.

CARIBBEAN GAS CHEMICAL LIMITED’S STATEMENT REGARDING NUISANCE COMPLAINT BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited (CGCL) commenced commissioning of its facility located at Lot2A Union Industrial Estate, La Brea on August 17, 2020.  Shortly thereafter CGCL began receiving complaints advanced by residents of the Square Deal, Vessigny and Sobo Communities, (persons residing outside the Buffer Zone of the Union Industrial Estate), regarding excessive noise and vibrations.

CGCL acknowledges that the noise levels would be above what residents would have been accustomed to, prior to this exercise and is concerned about the wellbeing of our neighbours.

As such, CGCL has sought to ascertain the validity of the reported concerns and has commenced monitoring of noise levels throughout the plant and along the perimeter, roadways, access and egress of the Industrial Estate, at intermittent times during the day and night.  Additional testing has been conducted within the areas from which the complaints have emanated (Square Deal, Chin Fung Alley Sobo) to determine source and compliance.

CGCL is aware that complaints have also been lodged by residents, with the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), and expect that same will be investigated.  CGCL intends to fully cooperate with the Authority in this regard.
