Police say that inmates in the same cell as Christopher Banfield, who was beaten to death on Monday, have not yet been interviewed as enquiries into the incident continue.
Banfield, 48, reportedly got into an argument with a cellmate at the Arouca Maximum Security Prison. A fight erupted, during which Banfield was severely beaten.
His body was found on the floor of the cell around 5.30 am on Tuesday by a prison officer performing routine inspections.
Police said while a suspect has been identified, the inmates kept in custody at that wing of the prison were identified as being “mental patients” and would therefore require a psychological evaluation to be performed.
Banfield, of Flanagin Town, was charged with the murder of his father, 75-year-old Peter Banfield, in June 2025.
Police from the Region II Homicide Bureau are continuing investigations.
