Po­lice say that in­mates in the same cell as Christo­pher Ban­field, who was beat­en to death on Mon­day, have not yet been in­ter­viewed as en­quiries in­to the in­ci­dent con­tin­ue.

Ban­field, 48, re­port­ed­ly got in­to an ar­gu­ment with a cell­mate at the Arou­ca Max­i­mum Se­cu­ri­ty Prison. A fight erupt­ed, dur­ing which Ban­field was se­vere­ly beat­en.

His body was found on the floor of the cell around 5.30 am on Tues­day by a prison of­fi­cer per­form­ing rou­tine in­spec­tions.

Po­lice said while a sus­pect has been iden­ti­fied, the in­mates kept in cus­tody at that wing of the prison were iden­ti­fied as be­ing “men­tal pa­tients” and would there­fore re­quire a psy­cho­log­i­cal eval­u­a­tion to be per­formed.

Ban­field, of Flana­gin Town, was charged with the mur­der of his fa­ther, 75-year-old Pe­ter Ban­field, in June 2025.

Po­lice from the Re­gion II Homi­cide Bu­reau are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
