SHASTRI BOODAN

The Chaguanas Mayor has called on the Government to provide more resources to the police.

Faaiq Mohammed made the comment on Sunday while distributing Mother’s Day gifts to burgesses.

Mohammed said police are not getting the necessary tools to fight crime and have to constantly beg the private sector for assistance.

He said, “There are more murders than days.”

Mohammed said more patrols without the necessary resources may prove futile for the police.

He said the Ministry of Local Government should also increase the number of Municipal Police in regional bodies.

“Recently we had to get donations for a drone. From time to time they would contact my office to get computers. Even simple things such as lighting, we had an issue where prisoners escaped from the Chaguanas station because of bad lighting. You can clearly see that some mismanagement is happening with the funding at the Ministry of National Security,” he said.

Mohammed said the business community is still willing to donate to the police. However, the people are fed up with the Government. “We are getting fed up of picking up their slack,” he said.

Kathleen Barlo was one of the women who received a Mother’s Day gift from the mayor.

Mohammed said Kathleen is a “hero” who dedicated her life to attend to the needs of her son Brandon Barlo, 30, who was became crippled 11 years ago when he accidentally fell.

Brandon said he is unable to work and appreciates the effort of the mayor to assist his mother and several others on the occasion.
