A Maraval woman was arrested on Wednesday, after police raided her home in Moka and found just under $2 million in cash in a wall safe, along with four police patches and a pair of black tactical pants.
The raid, which occurred between 4 am and 8 am in the gated community, formed part of an anti-crime exercise in accordance with Operation Steadfast.
In a statement, the TTPS said the exercise was conducted by officers of the West End/Maraval Criminal Investigations Department, together with the West End Charge Room; the Western Divisional Task Force; the Western Divisional Gang and Intelligence Unit; the Inter Agency Task Force; and the Mounted and Canine Branch.
Acting on information relating to a male suspect, officers went to the location and carried out an extensive search of the premises in accordance with the Emergency Powers Regulations.
During the search, which was done in the presence of the suspect’s mother, a safe room was found behind the shelves of a walk-in closet, and further checks revealed a Honeywell safe which, when opened, reportedly contained a quantity of cash, including T&T and Barbadian currency.
Following the discovery of the money and other items, officers detained the woman and took her, along with the male suspect, to the West End Police Station, where officers from the Financial Investigations Bureau (FIB) were summoned to assist in counting the money, which amounted to $1,853,600 and $837 Barbadian currency.
The cash was seized in accordance with the Proceeds of Crime Act. (AP)
