A police constable has been committed to stand tril for the murder of a civilian who was killed in a police-involved shooting on October 20, 2016.
In a statement yesterday, the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) said in 2016 it initiated an investigation after several articles were published in the print media that Adalle Gilbert was shot and killed by the police during a shootout at Lawrence Street, San Fernando.
The PCA said investigatos of the Police Service cooperated with the PCA’s team in its preliminary investigation and the authority exercised its discretion to monitor and audit the conduct of the TTPS to ensure that there was an unbiased and thorough investigation.
The PCA said as the matter progressed, there was continuous dialogue and co-operation between the PCA and the TTPS.
It said upon the completion of the investigation, instructions were given by the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions that police officers Donald Snaggs and Peter Farnum be charged with Gilbert’s murder.
Snaggs was committed to stand trial yesterday for murder by Magistrate Joanne Connor who presided over the preliminary inquiry in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.
The magistrate upheld a no-case submission made by Farnum’s atttorney and freed him of the charge.
Gilbert was near his home at Carlton Lane, San Fernando, when he reportedly got into an argument with a group of plain-clothes police officers and was shot and killed.
