A mentally ill man was shot and killed by police on Monday evening, after he allegedly attacked an officer with a knife.
Police reported that around 6.40 pm, Constable Noel and other officers attached to the San Juan Police Station responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at the corner of Concord and Saddle Road, San Juan.
Police said residents at the location were being harassed by the man, who was later identified as Abraham Hackette. Residents reportedly called the police, noting that Hackette was an outpatient of the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital.
When the officers arrived, they met a knife-wielding Hackette, who police said was homeless but had a last known address at Farroe Terrace, San Juan.
Police said the 36-year-old refused to obey orders to drop the weapon and instead attacked the officers and stabbed Noel in the left and upper right arms. He was shot and later taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Constable Noel is expected to undergo surgery next week for the injuries sustained.
Inspector Hosein is continuing investigations.
