Five men were killed in separate shootings in Port-of-Spain, San Juan and Arima between 8.30 pm on Monday and 8 am yesterday.
In the first incident around 8.30 pm on Monday, Avery Weekes was shot dead at Harpe Place, Port-of-Spain.
Police said the 27-year-old, of Basilon Street, East Dry River, Laventille, had just gotten out of a car and was walking along Observatory Street when a gunman jumped out of a car which was idling nearby.
The suspect reportedly began shooting at Weekes, who began running and as he fell to the ground, the gunman stood over him and shot him several more times.
Police said a wheel-chair-bound man was also injured during the incident.
The two men were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where Weekes was pronounced dead.
The second victim was treated and remained in a stable condition up to yesterday. A third man who was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the shooting and was grazed in the leg by a bullet, refused medical treatment.
Weekes’ killing was said to be gang-related, as he is alleged to be an affiliate of the Rasta City gang.
And just around 2.30 pm yesterday, a man known only as Delano was shot and killed along Observatory Street.
The victim, who was a driver with the Port-of-Spain City Corporation, reportedly lived in Gonzales, Belmont.
Officers believe this killing was linked to Weekes’s murder the night before.
Two Arima men killed
on their way to work
In the second incident yesterday morning, Swissport employee Darryl Jessop was gunned down as he left for work.
Police said Jessop, 30, who relocated from Tumpuna Road, Cumuto, was shot dead at Mt Zion, Maturita, Arima.
Officers said he recently moved into the area to stay with relatives, following an attempt on his life in December 2021.
A close male relative yesterday described the father of three as “secretive.”
And in a separate shooting half an hour later, 57-year-old Brian Carter was gunned down at Hoyte Avenue, Arima.
Carter, who worked at Coca-Cola, was killed as he walked out of his house to get into his car to head to work.
Investigators were unclear if the two murders were linked. Officers said the only connection the two victims shared was that they were both wearing red t-shirts at the time of the murders.
HDC employee gunned down
An employee of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) was shot dead yesterday.
Police said Dennis Nero, 43, of Second Street, Saddle Road, San Juan, was killed around 6.15 am.
Speaking at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, a relative who did not want her name published said she was tired of begging Nero to change his attitude.
