The suspect, who evaded officers during shootout along the Solomon Hochoy Highway last week Monday, is still on the run.
However, police say an arrest is imminent since they now have the identity of the man.
The chase between the suspect and police officers unfolded amid traffic around 3.45 pm.
The suspect was among two men driving in a stolen Toyota fielder wagon. It was when officers moved to intercept the vehicle near the Indian Trail flyover that the men allegedly fired at them.
The officers returned fire, hitting one of the suspects.
He was pronounced dead at the Couva District Health Facility.
The other suspect fled into a nearby bushy area off the southbound lane of the highway and has not been found since.
A police officer attached to the investigation told Guardian Media that they believe they have an identity for the suspect from various sources, including CCTV footage, but did not want to reveal it to jeopardize the search efforts.
“The challenges initially in finding him at the location was the high vegetation or bush. There were three different searches that were taking place at the same time so we didn’t have the needed support on that day to follow him through the high vegetation that he would have gone into and by the time support would have come, he had already left the area,” the officer said.
Officers of both the Southern and Central Division are involved in the investigation.
Guardian Media understands that the suspect’s home was searched but there was no trace of him. Police say he is on the move.
“We searched several areas in south and central and the search continues but that is all we will say for now,” the officer said.
Several videos captured by motorists of the incident showed arm police officers running through the traffic. The sound of gunshots was also heard.
While motorists, who witnessed the shoutout were left traumatised. There were others who took to social media to banter about the suspect’s sprinting skills.
“That bandit shudda been running track..that was some real speed.. I hope they caught him tho,” one social media user said.
Another user added, “He had good pace for sure. Hope they time him to see if he can do something positive like run to represent the red white and black.”
“Them bandits could represent we in olympics 100 meters in 8 seconds that is speed,” a Facebook user suggested.
