Maraval man takes own life after girl’s assault

A 55-year-old Mar­aval man died by sui­cide af­ter he al­leged­ly as­sault­ed a 10-year-old girl known to him.

Po­lice said the man called the girl’s moth­er at around 4.50 am on Fri­day and told her he had mur­dered the child at his La Sei­va Vil­lage home.

The man’s iden­ti­ty is be­ing with­eld to pro­tect the iden­ti­ty of the girl.

The woman called the po­lice and told them what hap­pened, and of­fi­cers found the man at the Queen’s Park Sa­van­nah, Port-of-Spain. The man then told of­fi­cers he drank poi­son be­fore they ar­rived and they took him to the Port of Spain Gen­er­al where he died short­ly af­ter.

Po­lice were lat­er in­formed that one of the man’s neigh­bours in Mar­aval found the girl suf­fer­ing from sev­er­al wounds. The neigh­bour con­tact­ed the girl’s moth­er and in­formed her that he was tak­ing her to hos­pi­tal, where she re­mained up to yes­ter­day.

Of­fi­cers of the po­lice Spe­cial Vic­tims Unit (SVU) are con­tin­u­ing en­quiries.

Man crit­i­cal af­ter be­ing

knocked un­con­scious

Po­lice are search­ing for a 19-year-old Cara­pichaima man, af­ter he re­port­ed­ly struck his old­er broth­er with a piece of iron, knock­ing him un­con­scious, on Sat­ur­day night.

Po­lice said the broth­ers got in­to an ar­gu­ment at their home, dur­ing which time the younger sib­ling picked up a piece of iron and threw it at his broth­er, hit­ting him at the side of his head.

The old­er broth­er was knocked un­con­scious, as his sib­ling ran away.

A rel­a­tive who was at home at the time took the wound­ed man to the Ch­agua­nas Health Fa­cil­i­ty, where he was treat­ed and trans­ferred to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex, Mt Hope, where he re­mained up to yes­ter­day.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said the man sus­tained blunt head trau­ma from the force of the blow.

Cousins stab, chop

each oth­er dur­ing

An ear­ly morn­ing ar­gu­ment be­tween two cousins in Barataria on Sat­ur­day morn­ing led to both men be­ing hos­pi­talised af­ter they stabbed and chopped each oth­er.

Po­lice said one of the men was asleep at the fam­i­ly’s Ninth Street home at 5.30 am when he heard his rel­a­tive curs­ing and shout­ing out­side.

As he con­front­ed his cousin over the com­mo­tion, he told po­lice he was chopped by him with a cut­lass on his right shoul­der.

The wound­ed man said he pulled out a knife and stabbed his cousin sev­er­al times in the chest and back as they strug­gled.

Oth­er rel­a­tives heard the com­mo­tion and took both men to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex (EWM­SC), Mt Hope.

Po­lice said both men were in sta­ble con­di­tion yes­ter­day. - Com­piled by Shane Su­perville
