A 55-year-old Maraval man died by suicide after he allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old girl known to him.
Police said the man called the girl’s mother at around 4.50 am on Friday and told her he had murdered the child at his La Seiva Village home.
The man’s identity is being witheld to protect the identity of the girl.
The woman called the police and told them what happened, and officers found the man at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain. The man then told officers he drank poison before they arrived and they took him to the Port of Spain General where he died shortly after.
Police were later informed that one of the man’s neighbours in Maraval found the girl suffering from several wounds. The neighbour contacted the girl’s mother and informed her that he was taking her to hospital, where she remained up to yesterday.
Officers of the police Special Victims Unit (SVU) are continuing enquiries.
Man critical after being
knocked unconscious
by sibling
Police are searching for a 19-year-old Carapichaima man, after he reportedly struck his older brother with a piece of iron, knocking him unconscious, on Saturday night.
Police said the brothers got into an argument at their home, during which time the younger sibling picked up a piece of iron and threw it at his brother, hitting him at the side of his head.
The older brother was knocked unconscious, as his sibling ran away.
A relative who was at home at the time took the wounded man to the Chaguanas Health Facility, where he was treated and transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where he remained up to yesterday.
Investigators said the man sustained blunt head trauma from the force of the blow.
Cousins stab, chop
each other during
argument
An early morning argument between two cousins in Barataria on Saturday morning led to both men being hospitalised after they stabbed and chopped each other.
Police said one of the men was asleep at the family’s Ninth Street home at 5.30 am when he heard his relative cursing and shouting outside.
As he confronted his cousin over the commotion, he told police he was chopped by him with a cutlass on his right shoulder.
The wounded man said he pulled out a knife and stabbed his cousin several times in the chest and back as they struggled.
Other relatives heard the commotion and took both men to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt Hope.
