People's National Movement (PNM) General Secretary and former Member of Parliament for La Horquetta/Talparo, Foster Cummings, has strongly condemned what he described as baseless and defamatory allegations made against him during the 2025 general election campaign.
Cummings was accused of inappropriate behaviour involving women in his office in a widely circulated social media video. The video featured a man with cornrows who claimed he had witnessed beds being removed from Cummings’ office—an allegation Cummings has firmly rejected.
Responding to the incident, Cummings expressed deep disappointment with the tone and tactics of the recent campaign, contrasting it with what he described as the more respectful and issues-focused campaign of 2020.
“One thing about that campaign [2020] is at no time did it enter into the gutter. I sold my dream and vision for the constituency and Ms [Jearlean] John did that on behalf of the party she represented and herself. And at the end of the day the PNM was victorious, but we ran a very clean campaign,” he said.
“On this occasion, however, I must say the number of videos, murky and dirty and gutterish that have emerged, absolute lies just so that one can win. If in the politics, we are prepared to tarnish people’s character just so that we can emerge the winner, it is not a good day for the politics,” he added.
Cummings made it clear that he will continue to speak out against what he considers unethical conduct in the political arena.
“For the kind of gutter politics that emerged in the recent campaign I took part in, some of which involved malicious and inaccurate and outright lies being perpetrated on social media, nobody taking responsibility for it—but it is not a good day for the politics of Trinidad and Tobago. And it’s something that I will reject on every occasion that I have, that as politicians we must stick to truth and decency in the political arena.”
Although visibly angered by the allegations, Cummings said he does not believe it is worth his time, or the courts', to dignify the accusations by engaging with them online.
Cummings lost the La Horquetta/Talparo seat to United National Congress candidate Phillip Watts, who was his former campaign manager.
