A Cunupia businessman who was shot several times on Saturday as he walked out of his establishment in Trincity remained at the hospital in critical condition up to yesterday.
The 50-year-old victim underwent emergency treatment following the brazen shooting.
The incident, which investigators believe was a targeted attack, occurred as the victim exited the FCMC store in the Trincity business district, off the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Piarco.
The victim was about to enter his black Ford Ranger when he was confronted by the lone gunman.
Reports indicate that the shooter, who was of African descent, emerged from a gold Nissan Almera that had been parked nearby and opened fire.
The victim reportedly climbed into the passenger seat in an attempt to escape from the opposite side of the vehicle.
He then fled on foot towards the rear of the compound but was pursued and shot several more times before the gunman fled in the waiting vehicle.
The victim was taken to hospital by officers from the North Central Area East Task Force.
The getaway car was later spotted in the Tunapuna area and was intercepted, following which a 20-year-old Laventille man was detained.
The suspect remained in custody up to yesterday.
