A Cunupia teenager, who accompanied two friends to Maracas Beach for an unplanned sea bath, tragically drowned ten minutes after entering the water.

Christopher Chin, 18, of Warren Road, Cunupia, agreed to the impromptu lime with the two girls, aged 19 and 23, as part of a quick “getaway.” The women, both of whom live at Munroe Road, Cunupia, reportedly arrived at the beach around 1.30 pm with Chin.

Chin and the 19-year-old woman reportedly entered the water around 1.45 pm.

It was claimed that ten minutes later, Chin got into difficulty in the water and the woman shouted for help.

Two sea-bathers who were nearby, as well as three lifeguards, entered the water and retrieved Chin.

The lifeguards performed CPR as they waited for the Emergency Health Services to arrive.

Chin was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3.49 pm.
