A 34-year-old man died after a fire destroyed his home at Jordan Terrace, D’Abadie, on Saturday morning.
Police said around 11.30 am, a neighbour noticed smoke coming from the house and called for help. Fire officers from the Arima Fire Station responded and extinguished the blaze.
When they searched the building, they found the body of Quasi Squires inside a bedroom. The two-bedroom concrete structure had no electricity or running water. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Meanwhile, police and fire officers are also investigating several other fires that occurred over the weekend.
In Tobago, a family of four escaped without injury after a fire damaged their home in Lowlands on Saturday afternoon.
Police said around 4.50 pm, the homeowner returned to find flames coming from a room on the northern side of the upstairs portion of the two-storey house. She alerted her husband and two children, who were inside at the time, and they all ran to safety.
Fire officers from the Scarborough Fire Station responded and extinguished the blaze. About half of the building was damaged.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Earlier on Saturday, a house in Coromandel Village, Cedros, was destroyed by fire.
Around 6 am, the occupant was awakened by the heat and saw that his bed and mattress were on fire. He tried to extinguish the flames with water, but the house was soon engulfed. The man quickly fled the burning house.
The wooden and concrete structure measured about 30 by 40 feet and was fitted with electricity and water. It was not insured. All furniture and household items were lost.
Fire officers responded and extinguished the blaze. No one was injured.
A marked police vehicle also crashed in Princes Town on Friday while officers were responding to a fire at the Children’s Authority Building in Piparo.
Police said around 4.45 pm last Friday, W/Sgt Bassarath, PC Gilbert, and WPC Jackson were travelling in a Toyota Hilux, when PC Gilbert lost consciousness while driving on a bend after the bridge on Lower Piparo Road. The vehicle collided with a concrete retaining wall, damaging the left front.
PC Gilbert was taken to the Princes Town District Health Facility by a nearby officer. Emergency Health Services treated Sgt Bassarath and WPC Jackson, who were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital. Sgt Bassarath and PC Gilbert remained hospitalised in stable condition, while WPC Jackson was discharged after treatment.
