Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Operations, Curt Simon, has ordered an audit into all police uniforms, vehicles and computers belonging to the T&T Police Service (TTPS).
Simon’s decision came after police officers assigned to the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB), located at Garden Road in Aranguez, San Juan, reported uniforms and other items being stolen from their lockers in the last week.
The most recent incident was reported on Wednesday, after a police constable at the Aranguez location found his locker broken into and several items missing.
The officer, who had been on leave since April 30, claimed to have placed several items in his locker, which is in the SRP male dormitory, and left. Reporting for duty around 6.30 am on May 2, the officer claimed after opening his locker, he observed the lower part tampered with and upon checking, discovered items missing. These included one digital camouflage jacket, one digital camouflage pants, one tactical belt and a bulletproof vest.
This latest incident was reported one week after three GEB officers reported that uniforms and other items were stolen from their lockers in Aranguez on May 8. Among the items they reported missing were digital camouflage pants, utility belts, identification cards, rapid assault camouflage jackets, dump pouches, pistol holsters, $1,160 in cash, debit and credit cards, national identification cards, and other personal items. The three constables confirmed reporting the matter to senior GEB officers before making a formal report to the Barataria Police Station.
Meanwhile, Simon said his directive for the audit to be done was issued last week, and he was awaiting the findings.
Earlier this month, a pair of police officers were given the all-clear to pursue a lawsuit over being transferred from GEB after being interrogated over police uniforms that went missing from an office in May last year.
