Police investigators have been directed to pursue criminal charges in connection with the police involved shooting death of Joshua Samaroo, following consultations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), according to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).
Speaking during a media briefing today, Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro said the directive came after investigators reviewed the case file and consulted with the DPP regarding the incident, which took place on January 20, 2026, at the corner of College Road and Dookiesingh Street in St Augustine.
Guevarro said investigators had been instructed to proceed with a series of criminal charges arising from the events of that day.
However, he made it clear that no individual has been taken into custody or formally charged at this stage.
As a result, he said the TTPS could not disclose details regarding the number or nature of the proposed charges.
In a statement issued after the media briefing, the Commissioner said investigators have since been given the necessary directions and he is awaiting further feedback before providing any additional updates on the matter.
The TTPS said it remains committed to due process, transparency and professionalism as investigations continue.
