Just over a year after cyclist and photographer, Anthony Harris, was killed in a hit-and-run around the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, a man has been charged with causing Harris’ death by dangerous driving.
Naeem Bisnath, a motorist, was released on $300,000 bail after appearing in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Harris was struck while cycling on July 9, 2022, around the Queen’s Park Savannah, near the flashing traffic lights at President’s House. He later died.
Harris’ daughter, Charisse Harris, told Guardian Media on Thursday the arrest “is the beginning of coming to some sort of closure.”
She said, “Finally! It took almost a whole year. I guess that’s how almost all of our entire family feels at this point. Over the last year, we haven’t felt any better. It still feels as though it happened yesterday. Our dad was a big part of the family and he’s very important to all of us so this year didn’t reopen a wound cause the wound never healed and I don’t think it ever will.”
The TTPS says comprehensive investigations were conducted into the matter and advice was received from the Office of the Director of Prosecutions.
The suspect was arrested and charged in connection with the incident on July 11, this year.
Along with Arrive Alive, Charisse and her family have raised awareness over the last year to make drivers more aware of cyclists.
However, she feels a lot still needs to be done.
She said, “I think we are still at the same place where we were last year. The signs around the Queen’s Park Savannah need to be more visible. I think changing them from white to yellow will be great as well as the times the cyclists are allowed to use the right lane. I also think that needs to be on the Savannah as well, not just off of the side street entering into the Savannah. I think it needs to be on Savannah because not everybody pays attention to signs.”
