Police believe the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal accident in Enterprise yesterday was fleeing the scene of another accident at the time.
According to reports, Dillon Karriah was heading west along the Southern Main Road around 7.20 am when he reportedly hit another vehicle near Esmeralda Junction, in Cunupia.
The driver of the other car told police Karriah failed to stop. He told police he followed Karriah’s black Nissan Almera and saw him swerving in and out of traffic.
A short distance away, Karriah was attempting to overtake a vehicle near Enterprise Street, along the Southern Main Road when he crashed head-on into a silver Hyundai Trajet, driven by an elderly man.
The front seat passenger in Karriah’s car, identified only as “Grace,” died on the scene.
Karriah and both occupants of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital.
Guardian Media visited the scene of the accident and spoke to an eye-witness, who said he saw Karriah try to overtake another car before crashing.
“The black Almera was speeding and he was taking over and he bounce the seven-seater (Trajet) head-on,” the man said.
He was first on the scene, the man said.
“I approach the vehicle and saw the two occupants lying unconscious, they were under the dashboard. The people in the other vehicle were conscious but they were older people and they were shaking.”
The man said fire officers had to use the jaws of life to remove Karriah and his front-seat passenger from the vehicle.
He said Karriah regained consciousness a short while later and was complaining of chest pains.
He blamed the accident on several factors.
“I think it was speeding, reckless driving and drinking and driving...You could smell the alcohol on him,” the man said.
He urged motorists to be careful on the road and avoid drinking and driving.
Guardian Media visited Karriah’s relatives’ home but were told he no longer lived there.
