A Laventille man was killed during a confrontation with police in the capital city on Wednesday, while two firearms were recovered following the incident.
Police identified the dead man as Anderson “Elmo” Rodriguez, 31, of Picton Road, Laventille.
Police said officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) were on mobile patrol along St Paul Street, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain, around 11.30 pm, when they stopped a silver Elantra with three occupants and a gold Nissan Tiida with two occupants.
The two vehicles appeared to be in a convoy, and as officers stopped the Elantra, the driver of the Nissan Tiida reportedly reversed the vehicle and sped off along St Paul Street before turning onto Rodney Street.
Police said as the car turned onto Rodney Street, a man on the passenger side jumped out with what appeared to be a rifle and pointed it at the officers, who, fired several shots in the direction of that suspect, who ran off.
As the Tiida continued proceeding along Rodney Street and then onto Besson Street, the car came to a stop near the rear gate of the St Paul Street Multi-Purpose Complex, where the driver ran out of the vehicle and pointed a gun in the direction of the officers before firing several shots at them.
As the officers returned fire for a second time, the suspect managed to escape by jumping over a gate, during which time his firearm fell to the ground.
Police claimed that as the suspect continued running away, he pulled out a second gun and pointed it at the officers, prompting them to return fire for a third time. The suspect fell to the ground after this exchange of gunfire.
He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The suspect was later identified as Rodriguez.
Officers at the scene said they recovered one revolver and six rounds of ammunition, as well as a pistol loaded with a magazine containing a quantity of ammunition.
Checks revealed the Tiida, which bore false number plates, had been reportedly taken from its owner on August 27, during an incident of robbery with violence in the Central police district.
