Erla’s husband reacts to her arrest; says she’s in good spirits

Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Er­la Hare­wood-Christo­pher was said to be in high spir­its on Thurs­day when she was be­ing ques­tioned by her sub­or­di­nates.

Speak­ing with Guardian Me­dia to­day, Hare­wood-Christo­pher's hus­band Thel­don said he last saw his wife on Thurs­day at her of­fice.

"I saw her yes­ter­day at the head­quar­ters and she's in good spir­its," he told Guardian Me­dia.

Christo­pher said he too was do­ing well and was in the dark about the in­ves­ti­ga­tion. The re­tired po­lice of­fi­cer said he was "do­ing okay" and try­ing his best to keep up with his wife's de­ten­tion.

"Once she's seen us around, you know, she will have that good spir­it. When we are not around, I don't know what goes on, but so far, I be­lieve she's speak­ing, up to this time," he said, adding that he was un­able to speak to his wife about her de­ten­tion.

Christo­pher said he is learn­ing about his wife's de­ten­tion from the me­dia.

Er­la Hare­wood-Christo­pher spent Thurs­day night at the St Clair Po­lice Sta­tion, Port-of-Spain af­ter be­ing de­tained for ques­tion­ing in re­la­tion to on­go­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the Strate­gic Ser­vices Agency (SSA).

The coun­try’s first woman po­lice chief is be­ing ques­tioned in re­la­tion to the is­suance of two firearm user’s li­cences for AX2 bolt ac­tion sniper ri­fles by the SSA.

Sources said she could be charged with mis­be­hav­iour in pub­lic of­fice af­ter key doc­u­ments per­tain­ing to the FULs went miss­ing.

Her de­ten­tion came a day af­ter for­mer SSA head Roger Best was held for ques­tion­ing by po­lice. Best re­mains at the Bel­mont Po­lice Sta­tion.
