More than 24 hours after she was informed that the Police Service Commission (PolSC) lifted her suspension, Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher is yet to receive her reinstatement letter.
Guardian Media spoke today with the top cop's attorney, Senior Counsel Pamela Elder, who has questioned the delay in dispatching the letter.
News of Harewood-Christopher's suspension being lifted was raised in court after Justice Christopher Sieuchand dismissed her claim that the Police Service Commission acted illegally when it suspended her in January 2025.
Guardian Media attempted to contact the PolSC chairman, Dr Wendell Wallace, but the calls went unanswered.
The communications manager for the PolSC, Dale Brizan, also was contacted; however, the call was disconnected after our reporter identified himself.
During our interview today with Senior Counsel Elder, she asserted there is no reason for the delay in officially lifting the suspension.
“It is shocking. It is scandalous. It is deplorable,” the senior attorney said. “I can’t find the words to describe the conduct of the Service Commission in not issuing this letter with dispatch.”
Senior Counsel Elder says the acting appointment of Junior Benjamin became null and void the minute the Police Service Commission decided to lift the suspension.
“One has to look at the natural consequences which flow from the lifting of the suspension,” Pamela Elder SC points out. “This is not a commissioner who was dismissed and you’re looking to reinstate her. This is not a commissioner against whom disciplinary proceedings were instituted. This is a commissioner whom you notified that she had been suspended, and her suspension continued until the cessation of the investigation.”
“The investigation has come to an end,” the senior attorney said. “Why the delay?”
Sources within the executive of the Police Service say Junior Benjamin remains as the acting top cop until he receives a letter from the Police Service Commission rejecting his appointment.
As at midday, Harewood-Christopher was not at her office. However, sources say she is expected to show up at some point today.
