A 25-year-old Duncan Street man, who gave police a fake name, was arrested on Monday night for physically assaulting the daughter of Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander.
The man who told police his name was Dwight Yorke, was held after a boat ride, police said, after he was recently released from prison for an unrelated robbery.
Described as a “snatcher”, the man allegedly grabbed the woman’s gold chain while she was in a taxi along Charlotte Street, Port-of-Spain, on December 24, 2024. He is alleged to have punched the minister’s daughter in the face, causing her jaw to swell after she yanked the gold chain back from him.
Alexander, who at the time of the robbery was a senior superintendent of police, resigned three months later and successfully contested the Tunapuna constituency on a United National Congress ticket in the lead up to the April 25 General Election last year.
Police said after learning who the woman’s father was, the suspect went into hiding and later ended up in prison on a different matter. He is expected to be charged later this week.
