A 25-year-old Dun­can Street man, who gave po­lice a fake name, was ar­rest­ed on Mon­day night for phys­i­cal­ly as­sault­ing the daugh­ter of Home­land Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter Roger Alexan­der.

The man who told po­lice his name was Dwight Yorke, was held af­ter a boat ride, po­lice said, af­ter he was re­cent­ly re­leased from prison for an un­re­lat­ed rob­bery.

De­scribed as a “snatch­er”, the man al­leged­ly grabbed the woman’s gold chain while she was in a taxi along Char­lotte Street, Port-of-Spain, on De­cem­ber 24, 2024. He is al­leged to have punched the min­is­ter’s daugh­ter in the face, caus­ing her jaw to swell af­ter she yanked the gold chain back from him.

Alexan­der, who at the time of the rob­bery was a se­nior su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice, re­signed three months lat­er and suc­cess­ful­ly con­test­ed the Tu­na­puna con­stituen­cy on a Unit­ed Na­tion­al Con­gress tick­et in the lead up to the April 25 Gen­er­al Elec­tion last year.

Po­lice said af­ter learn­ing who the woman’s fa­ther was, the sus­pect went in­to hid­ing and lat­er end­ed up in prison on a dif­fer­ent mat­ter. He is ex­pect­ed to be charged lat­er this week.
