An early morning fire destroyed a dwelling house at Pharry Village, Vega de Oropouche, on the Toco Main Road, leaving a family of eight homeless.
A straightening and painting garage located at the house was also destroyed and vehicles damaged.
Losses to Seemungal family have been estimated $100,000.
Neighbours told Guardian Media at around 3.30 am yesterday they heard a loud explosion and saw the house on fire.
Appliances from Sangre Grande responded to the blaze but by the time they arrived the house had already burnt to the ground. However, they stopped the fire from spreading to nearby houses.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Anil Juteram, chairman of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, visited the family and promised to provide mattresses and a hamper for the family. He commended the fire officers for their response. Also at the scene was former MP for Fyzabad Chandresh Sharma.
