Homeowners at Bellview Village in Claxton Bay say they are living on a ticking time bomb.
Residents told Guardian Media yesterday that since the collapse of a home on Wednesday, they were now fearful for their lives as their properties continue to show signs of weakening.
Representatives from the Ministry of Energy and the Estate Management Business Development (EMBD) Company are still seeking answers on what led to the collapse of the home on Wednesday.
Its owner, Giles Garica, said he was not only reeling from trauma but has found himself in a tight situation.
“I’m staying by my wife’s mother’s house, the one behind my house back here...that is seven people in a two-bedroom house. You do the calculations.”
He said prayers and support from wellwishers have been his pillars of strength, but as he stared at the crumbled remains of the house he became more and more uncertain.
“I find the ministries and their representatives coming in very, very little, slow. Probably they have plenty work to do...for comfort, I feel I could have seen them a little faster.”
Yesterday, representatives from the Ministry of Social Development visited the families to iron out accommodation details. It was also when Marva Fritz said a startling revelation was made about the quarrying which allegedly brought down the house in the area and is now threatening others.
“An official from the quarry company told me today that for ten years they operating under sea level, so that undermining for the longest while and no one knows.”
Another neighbour, Nardera Ramsaran-Williams, said the incident has left her family on the edge, as there are fears her home could also come crashing down next.
“It is very very unsafe because if one shower of rain come I will end up straight in the back, we can’t live like this, we need housing accommodations.”
Ramsaran-Williams said she and her family had spent the last two nights in their vehicle. She, like her neighbours, want authorities from the Estate Management Business Development Limited to take swift action in providing a safe space for them in the coming days.
