Ferry service to Venezuela will end on June 1

The fer­ry ser­vice to Venezuela will no longer op­er­ate from next month, ow­ing to the eco­nom­ic in­sta­bil­i­ty in the Latin Amer­i­can coun­try.A rep­re­sen­ta­tive from Pier 1, which ran the ser­vice, said the de­ci­sion came af­ter a con­sis­tent de­cline in pas­sen­ger num­bers. At $690 a tick­et, the ser­vice was the most af­ford­able op­tion for peo­ple seek­ing to vis­it Venezuela.The C/Prowler fer­ry ser­vice, which sailed be­tween Pier 1, Ch­aguara­mas, and Guiria, Venezuela, every Wednes­day, will be sus­pend­ing its week­ly ser­vice with ef­fect from June 1.

In ad­di­tion, a news­pa­per re­port on Tues­day said the is­land's postal ser­vice al­so had been sus­pend­ed.Ac­cord­ing to the Venezue­lan pub­li­ca­tion El Uni­ver­sal, work­ers at the Venezue­lan postal ser­vice, Ipos­tel, went on strike to de­mand pay­ment of their wages.El Uni­ver­sal al­so re­port­ed that since De­cem­ber there have been over 25 tonnes of un­de­liv­ered in­ter­na­tion­al mail at the Ipos­tel head­quar­ters in San Mart�n, Venezuela.
